The UN has launched the process of electing a new Secretary General

The UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly have formed a joint letter, initiating the procedure for electing a new Secretary General of the world organization.

According to the Report, the document was distributed by the press service of the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, acting as Chairman of the Security Council in November.

The joint letter "notes with regret" that in the entire history of the world organization, no woman has been appointed as its head, so "member countries are encouraged to seriously consider nominating women as candidates."

"We note the importance of regional diversity in the selection of the Secretary General," the document also says.

The candidate for the post of UN Secretary General is nominated by the member countries of the organization, each country has the right to propose no more than one candidate. To nominate a candidate, countries must send a corresponding letter to the Presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly. Candidates, in turn, must present their vision of the organization's development, as well as their sources of income. If the applicant works in the UN structure, then, as stated in the letter, he should "consider suspending his work at the UN during the election campaign in order to avoid a conflict of interests."

The process of direct selection of the Secretary General is scheduled for the end of July next year. Currently, two people have announced their desire to compete for the post of head of the world organization - the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, and the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Rebecca Greenspan.

The powers of the current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expire on December 31, 2026.
