California Governor sues Trump

The State of California and Governor Gavin Newsom have filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump, the Pentagon and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth (.pdf) in connection with the deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles.

The 22-page complaint, filed in the Federal District Court in San Francisco, alleges that Trump violated federal law and the Constitution. The state demanded that the court cancel the deployment of the National guardsmen and return control of them to the governor.

"Trump has repeatedly used extraordinary powers to exceed the boundaries of legitimate executive authority. On Saturday, June 7, he used a protest rally controlled by local authorities to make another unprecedented seizure of power, this time at the cost of the sovereignty of the state of California and contrary to the authority and role of the governor as commander-in-chief of the National Guard of the state," the document says.

The US authorities sent 2,000 National guardsmen and 700 Marines to California after the start of the riots, which were caused by raids by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) against illegal migrants, as a result of which dozens of people were detained. Protests have engulfed Los Angeles and San Francisco. Tear gas and stun grenades were used to disperse the protesters. The governor called the White House's decision illegal and demanded that the National guardsmen be recalled immediately. rbc.ru.
