According to the newspaper, Canada does not seek to conclude a free trade agreement with China. Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters on January 25.

He notes that such a document would contradict the North American Free Trade Agreement (USMCA), signed by the United States, Mexico and Canada during the first presidential term of Donald Trump.

According to Carney, the agreements with China dealt only with problematic issues in trade between the two countries, pointing to Chinese-made electric vehicles, agricultural products and fish products.

"We've fixed some of the issues with China that have arisen over the last few years," Carney said.

He also stressed that Canada "respects its obligations" under the USMCA agreement.

Yesterday, US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose duties of 100% on Canadian products if Ottawa enters into a trade agreement with China. nur.kz.

Earlier it was reported that Trump had withdrawn the invitation of the Canadian Prime Minister to the Peace Council. The reason could be Carney's speech at the Davos forum, in which the Canadian prime minister declared the "rupture of the world order" caused by the refusal of the great powers to comply with the established rules. It is assumed that Carney was referring to Trump's policies.
