The process of shallowing the Caspian Sea threatens to become irreversible and cause a chain of serious consequences, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev warned. tass.ru.

"As for the Caspian Sea, at the current rate of shallowing, this dangerous process may become irreversible, which will inevitably cause a chain reaction of environmental, socio-economic and even political consequences. Kazakhstan has taken the initiative to develop a special interstate program aimed at preventing ecosystem destruction and shallowing of the Caspian Sea," he said, speaking at the International Forum of Peace and Trust in Ashgabat.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called on the entire international community to support efforts aimed at preserving the Caspian Sea. "In general, in my opinion, water diplomacy requires close interstate coordination. The existing international institutions, as a rule, operate separately, within narrow mandates, which does not correspond to the scale of the growing water problems," the president said.
