The Japanese government resigned before the election of a new prime minister

The Japanese government, led by Shigeru Isiba, has resigned in full before the election of a new prime minister, which will be held on October 21 in the lower house of parliament.

According to the Report, this was announced by the office of the head of government.

Isiba served as Prime Minister of Japan for 386 days.

In a few hours, the key lower house of parliament will convene for an extraordinary session, during which the new chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Sanae Takaichi, will be elected prime minister, becoming the first female prime minister in Japanese history. The day before the vote, the LDP, which does not have a majority in parliament, was able to form an alliance with the conservative Japan Renewal Society Party, which guaranteed Takaichi's election.

Then, during the day, Sanae Takaichi will form a new government. According to Japanese media, Toshimitsu Motegi, who already held this position from 2019 to 2021, should become the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Motegi was one of Takaichi's competitors in the election of the new head of the LDP. Another of her opponents in the internal party elections, 44-year-old Shinjiro Koizumi (son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi), is reported to take over the post of defense minister, becoming the youngest head of the Japanese defense ministry.
