Sahara Desert flooded after abnormal rains

The flood hit the Sahara Desert after heavy rains, which are extremely rare in this region. This has not happened in the last 30-50 years, local residents said.

The Moroccan government said that in some areas, as much rain fell in two days as usually does not fall in an entire year. So, in the town of Tagunit, more than 100 mm of precipitation was recorded in 24 hours.

NASA satellites recorded how water gushed into Lake Iriki. It has remained dry for 50 years, Mir24 reports.

Meteorologists call such rains extratropical storms. They can change the weather for months and even years ahead, as the air retains more moisture, more evaporation occurs and, consequently, more storms.

For six years in a row, most of Morocco's territory has suffered from drought. The abundance of precipitation is likely to replenish groundwater reserves. During September, the reservoirs of the region filled at a record pace. However, it is unclear how the September rains will affect the drought in the long term.

At the same time, water gushing through the sands and oases of the desert claimed the lives of about 20 people in Morocco and Algeria. It also caused damage to farmers' crops.
