The Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the UN Office in Geneva held a side event on the sidelines of the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) on the theme "Combating gender-based violence: the path to economic growth, inclusivity and sustainable development".

The event was organized on the initiative of the diplomatic missions of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and the European Union, the Dunyo news agency reports.

The main panelists of the event were permanent representatives of all Central Asian and EU countries, as well as the Director of the International Labor Standards Department of the International Labor Organization, Corinne Varga.

The event was attended by representatives of more than 60 member countries, UN structural units, as well as a number of international NGOs.

The Uzbek side's speech provided information on the essence and significance of large-scale reforms in Uzbekistan, implemented at the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in the field of gender equality.

In particular, it was stressed that in recent years Uzbekistan has made significant progress towards the full achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring gender equality, protecting women's rights and enhancing their role in public administration.

It was noted that according to the index developed by the World Bank, Uzbekistan was among the 5 fastest growing countries in the world in the field of gender equality, and according to the index of open gender data in the top 20 countries. Thanks to the measures taken, the proportion of women in public administration in Uzbekistan increased from 27% to 35%, in the economy and industry sector to 46%, and women's employment has become one of the priorities of Uzbekistan's economic policy.

The attention of the participants was also drawn to the "Dialogue of Women Leaders of Central Asia", established in 2021 on the initiative of Uzbekistan, which included all five countries of the region.

Representatives of the EU, the United Kingdom and the ILO, who spoke at the event, praised the criminalization of domestic violence in Uzbekistan, as well as measures to expand women's economic opportunities and realize their entrepreneurial potential.
