The conference was held under the title "Women judges of Uzbekistan: Symbols of justice and strength", which discussed such issues as the historical role of women judges in the justice system, their contribution to modernity, women's access to the judicial profession, gender equality in the administration of justice, the role of women judges in legal reforms and ensuring access to justice for all.
The event gathered about a hundred participants, among whom were women judges from various regions of Uzbekistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Georgia, the Philippines, Zimbabwe, as well as representatives of the Supreme and Constitutional Courts.
In his speech, Edward Michalski, Deputy Director of the USAID Mission in Uzbekistan, noted USAID's contribution to promoting gender equality in the judicial system of Uzbekistan: "As part of our efforts to strengthen the judicial system, we support the development of a gender-sensitive judicial system, which includes the introduction of gender-sensitive laws and guidelines, training programs for judges on gender equality and the creation of gender-sensitive courtrooms. We are proud to have supported gender training for judges from all regions of Uzbekistan, and equally proud to be part of gender reforms in the judicial system."
Currently, there are more than 180 female judges working in Uzbekistan, of whom more than 25 hold senior judicial positions. The presence of female judges in the courts enhances their legitimacy by demonstrating openness and accessibility to all who seek justice.
The International Day of Women Judges provides a unique opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women in the judicial system and to emphasize the importance of gender equality in the administration of justice. The Conference is an example of an initiative aimed at strengthening gender equality in the judicial system and creating an enabling environment for increasing the number of women in the legal profession.
