Scientists have demanded a moratorium on artificial reduction of the Sun's brightness by solar geoengineering methods. The technology, which is based on spraying aerosols with sulfur particles in the stratosphere to reflect light back into space, can lead to a decrease in solar activity in the Earth's atmosphere. Because of this, the monsoon rain cycle in South Asia and West Africa will be disrupted. As a result, the yield of many crops will decrease on the planet and millions of people will face the threat of starvation.
In addition, experts believe that reducing the brightness of the Sun can reverse progress in restoring the ozone layer, which protects life on Earth from deadly ultraviolet radiation, Mir24 reports.
Given these factors, climatologists said that the fight against global warming at the moment should be limited to reducing emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and other substances into the atmosphere. They also called for the development of methods for the utilization of carbon dioxide in industry and energy.
