The experiment involved 18 people aged 50 to 75 years suffering from hypertension. During the first two weeks, participants consumed broccoli, cauliflower, white cabbage and curly cabbage soups. Then their diet changed to include dishes of potatoes, pumpkins, carrots and sweet potatoes, which they ate for two more weeks. After that, the subjects returned to their usual diet.
The analysis of the results showed that during the consumption of cruciferous vegetables, the participants' systolic pressure decreased by an average of 2.5 points compared to the period when they ate dishes from other vegetables, writes RuNews24.ru.
The authors of the study from Edith Cowan University (Australia) believe that this is due to the high content of nutrients such as vitamin K and magnesium, which are abundant in cruciferous vegetables. These substances, according to scientists, can play a key role in normalizing blood pressure.
