The project provides for the reconstruction of at least 45 rural schools across the country, providing them with safe water, modern sanitation, reliable heating and clean energy solutions. This will reduce the energy consumption of schools by 30% and greenhouse gas emissions by 50%.
31,500 children, especially teenage girls, will benefit directly from the project, thanks to separate gender-oriented sanitary facilities, which will reduce the number of school absences. In addition, 2,700 educators and school leaders will receive training on climate resilience, gender-based WASH, and community engagement, which will ensure the long-term sustainability of the project.
Uzbekistan is facing one of the fastest growing school populations in the world, with more than 1.4 million students attending schools with limited access to water. Many institutions, especially in rural areas, use outdated toilets and inefficient heating systems. The project aims to address these challenges by implementing climate-resilient, inclusive, and gender-sensitive infrastructure, creating a model for future investments in education across the country.
The project is based on the principles of transparency and honesty. The digital portal "My Best School" will allow the society to track budgets, contractors, construction dates and the progress of the project in real time. It is also planned to pilot a Pact of Integrity with the participation of civil society, so that procurement and reconstruction work take place honestly, without corruption, and taking into account the interests of parents, teachers and communities.
The project supports the implementation of new building standards and the national school optimization plan, helping to bring Uzbekistan's education system in line with international best practices in the field of climate sustainability and gender equality. It makes a direct contribution to achieving the SDGs:
- SDG 4 - Quality education
- SDG 6 - Clean water and sanitation
- SDG 13 - Combating climate change
