During 1991-1993, the Central Bank conducted many studies on the introduction of the national currency into circulation, and studied the experience of foreign countries.
Since November 15, 1993, "sum coupons" have been put into circulation as a means of payment. To gain some experience in the implementation of monetary reform, "sum coupons" served as a transitional currency.
After gaining sufficient experience in this area, the national currency of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the sum, was put into circulation on July 1, 1994. Banknotes in face value were put into circulation one after another 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200 (1997 in 1999), 500 (1999) and 1000 soums (2001).
Over the years, the Central Bank has conducted research to improve the quality, safety and design of banknotes.
In 2018, compact and lighter coins of a new design were issued - in denominations of 50, 100, 200 and 500 soums. The 1000-sum coin with a new design was put into circulation in 2022.
In continuation of the cash reform, a new banknote design was developed. In 2021, new banknotes were presented to the society in denominations of 2 000, 5 000, 10 000, 20 000, 50 000, 100 000 soums, and in 2022 - a banknote with a face value of 200,000 soums.
These banknotes are very different from the old ones in terms of paper quality and protective layers. Their design reflects the themes of the "Great Silk Road" and the historical cities of our country.
The national currency is an important state symbol that ensures the economic independence of the state, reflects its identity and introduces it to the world. Respect for state symbols, first of all, expresses the high attention of this people to themselves.
