According to reports, the opening ceremony took place on Tuesday in Guba, attended by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, as well as the Presidents of Somalia, Djibouti and Kenya.
Construction of the station began in 2011 in the west of the country, 30 km from the border with Sudan. The total cost of the project is $4.6 billion. It is the largest hydroelectric power plant on the continent, with a capacity of 5,250 MW and a cascade of dams. The main dam is 145 m high and 1.8 km long.
With the commissioning of the hydroelectric power station, Ethiopia plans to double its electricity production. In the future, it is planned to fully provide electricity to the entire population of the country, and supply the surplus to neighboring states.
During the opening of the dam, Abiy Akhmet stated that the construction was not aimed at harming neighbors, but was designed to "provide electricity to the entire region."
Since 2012, Ethiopia has been negotiating with Egypt and Sudan on the rules for using the waters of the Nile for the operation of hydroelectric power plants. Concerned about the possibility of unilateral management of a huge reservoir without international agreements, the neighboring states have not yet come to a common solution.
