As part of the Week of Pilgrimage Tourism, the festival of Islamic applied arts "Book Culture in Movarounnahr" was held in the "Eternal City" of the Silk Road Samarkand Tourist Center.

The event featured the works of about 30 artisans and calligraphers from Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Ferghana regions, the Republic of Karakalpakstan.

"It is known from history that Arabic writing has made a great contribution to the spiritual, educational and cultural development of Islamic culture," says Barot Amonov, head of the Scientific Department for the Development of Pilgrimage Tourism at the Imam Bukhari International Research Center. - Initially, the Holy Quran was copied in handwritten form on leather, ceramics, wood and paper. In the Middle Ages, before the invention of printing, any such work became not just a book, but also a masterpiece of folk applied art. Such a craft was considered a real art. And over time, the Arabic script began to penetrate into other cultures. Today, examples of elegant Arabic calligraphy can be seen on the facades of world-famous historical monuments of Uzbekistan, many modern mosques and madrassas. This kind of ornament fascinates tourists, helps them to feel the unique worldview of our ancestors.

    - Over the centuries, Bukhara, Khiva, Kokand, Samarkand and Tashkent schools of calligraphy have been formed in Uzbekistan, - B. Amonov continued. - This kind of art manifested itself in architecture, pottery, painting, wood carving and jewelry.

A master class on Arabic calligraphy and an international conference dedicated to improving the system of preservation and study of ancient written sources were also held on the sidelines of the week of pilgrimage tourism.
