This
nomination includes 10 unique architectural objects of Tashkent modernism,
which were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This decision was an
important historical step towards the international recognition of the
architectural heritage of modernism in Uzbekistan.
The UNESCO
World Heritage Committee is an intergovernmental body that makes decisions on
the protection of the most outstanding cultural and natural heritage sites
within the framework of the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural
and Natural Heritage of 1972. The delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan took
an active part in the 48th session of the Committee, which was held in Busan
from July 19 to 29, 2026.
These
include the Jemchug residential Building, the State Museum of History of
Uzbekistan, the Peoples' Friendship Palace, the State Museum of Art of
Uzbekistan, the Tashkent State Circus building, the Central Exhibition Hall of
the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan, the National Palace of Cinema of Uzbekistan,
the Chorsu market, the Cosmonauts metro station, and the Solar solar complex,
located in the Tashkent region.
These objects
are the most striking examples of modernist architecture of the second half of
the 20th century, in which modern architectural solutions are harmoniously
combined with the national traditions of Central Asia.
As a result
of the decision, the nomination "Architecture of Tashkent Modernism.
Modernism and Traditions of Central Asia" has become the sixth cultural
heritage site of Uzbekistan included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In
addition, this is the first national nomination of Uzbekistan included in the
UNESCO World Heritage List over the past 25 years.
In
addition, Uzbekistan became the first country in Central Asia and the CIS to
include the architectural heritage of 20th-century modernism in the UNESCO
World Heritage List. This achievement is another important result of the
country's consistent efforts to preserve, scientifically study and
internationally promote the architectural heritage.
