Malaysia will impose a ban on social networks for people under 16, media reported

The Malaysian government has announced its intention to ban registration in social networks for users under the age of 16 from 2026, the New Straits Times portal reports.

According to Communications Minister Fahmy Fadzil, the platforms should prepare the electronic identification system (eKYC) for the ban.

"We expect all platform providers to be ready to implement the measures by next year," the minister said. In the coming months, the Malaysian authorities intend to discuss with operators and the public the details of implementing an age verification system and provide a compliance monitoring mechanism.

Earlier in October, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to raise the minimum age of social networks from 13 to 16 years. The Malaysian government notes that this measure is aimed at reducing the risks for teenagers: from cyberbullying and online fraud to sexual violence over the Internet. ria.ru.
