How many people with disabilities live in Uzbekistan?

    The World Bank has prepared an analytical report with recommendations on public policy measures that need to be taken for the comprehensive socio-economic integration (inclusion) of persons with disabilities in the country.

    According to a World Bank study, in Uzbekistan, 13.5% of the total population aged 3 years and older have some form of disability, and 3.5% have a serious form of disability.

    The prevalence of disability in the country is closely related to age: 54% of people aged 60 and older have some form of disability.

    Officially, in 2022, 845.3 thousand people, or 2.3% of the total population, were recognized as people with disabilities.

    Of the total number of people with disabilities, a much larger number live in rural areas. So, in villages - 532 thousand, and in cities - 313.3 thousand. The highest percentage is observed in Navoi region (3.6%), Syrdarya region (3.1%) and in the Republic of Karakalpakstan (2.9%).

    In Uzbekistan, there are 142.3 thousand disabled children under the age of 18 and 396.7 thousand people with disabilities up to retirement age. There are more men with an established disability (475.8 thousand) than women (369.5 thousand).

    In the republic, people with disabilities face numerous difficulties in various fields. The Government of the country is taking measures to improve the situation, including steps to implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which the country ratified in 2021.
