During the conference, Ombudsman Feruza Eshmatova presented an overview of the progress made by Uzbekistan in the field of human rights protection, with special attention to women, persons with disabilities and migrant workers.
David Hoffman, Director of the USAID mission in Uzbekistan, who also spoke at the conference, noted: "Respect and protection of fundamental human rights are the key to building a stronger Uzbekistan. USAID supports the institution of the Ombudsman because we believe that any society needs independent voices to protect the human rights and freedoms of its citizens. We also recognize that international cooperation and the constant exchange of knowledge that was demonstrated at this conference are vital for strengthening national human rights protection mechanisms."
The conference served as a platform for discussing and further strengthening the protection of the rights of women, people with disabilities, as well as the labor rights of citizens. The participants developed practical solutions and recommendations to improve the security of private information of representatives of vulnerable segments of the population when using digital tools. National human rights institutions, representatives of the Government of Uzbekistan and civil society worked together at the conference to ensure further promotion of human rights initiatives.
USAID has supported the Ombudsman Institution in Uzbekistan for many years and has assisted in the development of legislation that expands the capabilities and competence of this institution to ensure its institutional independence. USAID also provided information and communication equipment, which allowed the Ombudsman's office to expand the range of legal services provided to citizens throughout the country.
The Office of the Ombudsman works with the Chamber of Lawyers and national non-governmental organizations in the framework of a public-private partnership with the assistance of USAID to ensure access to justice for every citizen of Uzbekistan.
