According to the results of previous seasons, Uzbekistan was consistently among the top ten main onion exporters, but the 2023/24 season was marked by bans on onion exports from many countries of the world. In particular, the ban on onion exports was imposed by Egypt, which is usually one of the five largest exporters. Turkey made a similar decision, although it was later reversed.
At the same time, in Uzbekistan, as in many other countries of the region, records were recorded in terms of areas and volumes of onion production. As a result, onion prices in Uzbekistan in January were 40% lower than during its harvesting, which guaranteed losses for resellers.
However, this does not mean that the onion was not sold. On the contrary, traders tried to minimize losses on onions, so they were more actively looking for export opportunities than usual. As a result, already in January, Poland's wholesale markets were literally flooded with onions from Uzbekistan. In addition, the first export shipments of onions of the new harvest will begin at the end of March, which may also be quite high.
According to EastFruit analysts, this season onion exports from Uzbekistan may significantly exceed 300 thousand tons, which will become a new export record. This will allow Uzbekistan to surpass Poland, Afghanistan, Spain, Egypt and, possibly, the United States in terms of onion exports and enter the top 5 world exporters.
