The Law "On approval of the Water Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan" was discussed at the next plenary session of the Senate.

The country is taking systematic measures to effectively use water resources, introduce water-saving technologies, and improve the reclamation status of irrigated lands.

As a result of the reforms carried out, annual water consumption has decreased from an average of 64 billion cubic meters to 51 billion cubic meters compared to the 90s of the last century.

However, consistent reforms and fundamental changes that have taken place, the formation of a new development strategy, and changes in the socio-economic foundations of water relations have necessitated a review of water legislation.

It was noted that the Water Code, which is approved by law, systematizes the main legal acts in the field of water relations.

Thus, the powers, tasks and functions of the Cabinet of Ministers, ministries and departments, and local government bodies in the field of regulating water relations are being clarified.

The conditions for the implementation of public-private partnership mechanisms in the field of water resources management, issues of responsibility for violations of the water intake procedure, and the main directions of international cooperation in the field of water relations are determined.

The adoption of the Water Code will ensure the rational use, effective management and protection of water resources. Issues related to the duplication of powers of government agencies in this area will be resolved. The responsibility of water suppliers and consumers will increase.

The law also serves to achieve the country's water security. It covers issues such as meeting the water needs of all sectors of the economy and the environment, rational use of water resources, and improving the condition of water infrastructure and irrigated lands in an era of increasing water scarcity.

In addition, legal foundations are being created for the long-term development of water management, increasing the efficiency of water resources use, attracting investments in the field and technological modernization are being stimulated.

At the same time, the Law is aimed at implementing the norms of international water law into national water legislation and enhancing the positive image of Uzbekistan in the international arena.

At the end of the discussion, the Law was approved by the senators.
