China plans to build a giant rail gun to launch hypersonic planes into space, making Nasa’s dream come true

‌Chinese scientists are developing a huge electromagnetic launch system designed to launch an impressive 50-ton space plane, longer than even a Boeing 737.

According to the South China Morning Post, the system, known as a “giant rail gun,” is designed to accelerate the aircraft to speeds of up to Mach 1.6. After reaching the final point of the route, the device's engine accelerates it until it reaches the edge of space at seven times the speed of sound.

If implemented, the project will significantly reduce fuel consumption for space flight, allowing larger payloads to be carried and saving money. Although this is an ambitious plan, scientists are already actively working on its implementation, despite obstacles and financial difficulties.

China is not the only country considering such electromagnetic systems for launching space objects. While it is currently unknown whether the project will succeed in becoming a reality, the potential benefits and prospects of maglev technology could be key factors in its success.
