In the 2022/23 academic year, a record 1,089 students enrolled in higher education institutions in the United States, compared with 631 in 2021/22, the report says. The majority, or 57.2 percent, studied undergraduate; 29.9 percent had higher education, 7.9 percent had optional practical training, and 5 percent were enrolled in non-degree programs, such as English or short-term studies.
According to the report, the total number of international students in the United States exceeded 1 million last academic year, up 14 percent from the previous year, and reached a new high of 1,057,188.
The "Open Doors 2023" program, organized by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State, emphasizes that the United States remains the main destination for international students. These students, who continue to recognize the global leadership of the United States in higher education, come from almost all countries of the world.
In the 2021/22 academic year, 188,753 American students studied abroad to obtain a certificate of credit (academic credit), which represents a 13-fold increase over the previous year and more than halfway to the pre-pandemic level.
