The President of the Senate met with the UN Deputy Secretary General in Samarkand

    Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbayeva held a meeting with Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification Ibrahim Tiau in Samarkand during the 21st session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

    During the dialogue, issues of expanding cooperation with specialized UN structures in terms of combating desertification and land degradation, preventing dust storms, and preserving biodiversity were discussed.

    As information, it should be noted that Uzbekistan became one of the first countries in the Asian region to become a member of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. This Convention was ratified by the Parliament of Uzbekistan on August 31, 1995 and entered into force in 1996. Today, 197 countries are members of this Convention.

    In the context of global environmental problems, practical measures aimed at protecting the environment and improving the environmental situation in Uzbekistan were discussed, in particular, work on the adoption and implementation of laws, regulations and state programs.

    Ibrahim Tiau stressed the seriousness of Uzbekistan's initiatives to restore a green world and the progress achieved, the country has become one of the leading countries in preventing land degradation, as well as restoring land, and by its practical actions is an example for everyone.

    Following the meeting, an agreement was reached to consistently continue dialogue and cooperation on issues related to the environmental agenda, the environment and climate change, as well as to develop joint actions and mitigation measures.
