Ombudsman: Cooperation of the CIS member states on migration serves to further strengthen good-neighborly relations

    On June 27, 2024, a regular meeting of the CIS Commission on Human Rights was held in St. Petersburg. It was attended by a member of this Commission, a representative of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman) from the Republic of Uzbekistan Feruz Eshmatov.

    Representatives of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan also took part in the discussions.

    Based on the issues on the agenda of the meeting, the participants discussed issues of protecting the social rights of citizens working in the Commonwealth countries.

    At the meeting, the representative of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for human rights, Feruza Eshmatova, told the members of the Commission that it is advisable to improve national legislation in the field of migration in countries based on international law and strengthen mechanisms for protecting the rights and freedoms of migrants.

    She drew attention to the fact that the issues of improving legislation in the field of migration and protecting the rights of migrants are very relevant in the Commonwealth. The Ombudsman also expressed confidence that the formation of a unified approach to the definition and classification of the rights and duties of migrants, consistent with international human rights obligations, can help solve many long-standing problems in the field of migration.

    It should be noted that the "New Regulation on the CIS Commission on Human Rights" was adopted at the meeting of the heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States on October 15, 2022 following the summit in Astana, Kazakhstan. The activities of the CIS Human Rights Commission have been established. The first meeting of the CIS Commission on Human Rights was held on November 29, 2023 in Minsk.
